Plenty of extra water is essential for a newly planted tree, shrub or perennial to become established, especially during the heat of summer. Extra daily water will keep the roots moist, encouraging new growth and reducing shock.

The Establishment Phase

Adding new plants to an already established landscape creates a need for extra water for the new plants without over watering the established plants, which requires hand watering.

  • Spring and fall additions: 1 time per day for 2 weeks
  • Summer additions: 2 times per day for 2+ weeks
  • Apply enough water to saturate entire root ball

The Basics of Plant Care

Water

Proper watering with automatic systems. Early morning hours recommended.

Nutrients

Quality slow-release fertilizer in spring and fall. Iron chelate for deficiencies.

Insect & Disease prevention

Clean beds, proper watering timing, dormant oil spray applications.

Pruning

Regular pruning for healthy growth. Best times: late fall and early spring.
