Summer Planting Tips

Tips to Successful Summer Planting

First, don't be afraid to water daily for the first few weeks and then slowly back off to every other day, then to two - three times per week. Use a root stimulator like B-1 several times to help with shock.

Don't fertilize using any kind of commercial chemical fertilizer for at least one year.

Plant during the early morning or early evening. This is easier on you and easier on the plants.

Water during the early morning hours only if possible and make sure you water slowly and deeply. Until you get a watering schedule down, water with as many gallons as the container the plant came in. If it came in a 5 gallon nursery container then give it 5 gallons of water during each watering, this isn't as much water as you think and doing less just jeopardizes your chances of success.

If you are container growing you just need to water till the water starts coming out the bottom and you will have to water 1 -2 times a day. Container growing is hard on any plant because the roots are exposed to the same temperature as the outside air, where if they were planted the roots would be 30-40 degrees cooler.

Congratulations, wasn't that easy!

Create an Easy Water Garden

Anyone who thought being a water gardener strictly involved a large, water-filled pond in the backyard with a waterfall or stream has never been captured by the beauty and simplicity of a container water garden.
Any vessel that holds water and supports plant life can be transformed into a container water garden. However, containers made specifically to serve as container water gardens are populating garden center shelves across the country. These specially made containers make it extremely easy to enjoy a miniature water garden.
These container water gardens can go almost anywhere in the landscape; whether placed near the front door, tucked in a corner of a garden path, or added to a small balcony or patio.
Little work is required to turn a container water garden into a breathtaking, mini ecosystem pond. Simply rinse the inside of the bowl and partially fill with water. Then place plants on the ledge inside the bowl or at the bottom of the bowl.
Add decorative rocks to naturalize the container water garden and provide surface area for bacteria to grow, which the fish will happily consume! Acclimate your fish to the water by placing them, still bagged from the store, into the filled container garden. A small spitter or fountain can be added to the container to help aerate the water and provide a soothing sound. With the ease of container water gardens anyone can enjoy the sound and beauty of water, even in the smallest of spaces.

Trees are a Part of our Lives

Trees make our lives better by providing shade and air conditioning in the summer. They protect us from the wind, and their leaves provide mulch for our plants during winter. Trees modify the climate and create a pleasant place to live.
Trees give neighborhoods their own character, enhancing good architecture and hiding bad. Tall growing trees create a skyscape and give a landscape dimension and color.
In business districts trees can soften the lines of buildings, give the street a sense of harmony and pull together diverse elements. Trees also absorb noise, filter the air and limit the visual impact of industrial areas.
In the Magic Valley trees can be successfully planted from early spring to late fall. Fall can be a great time for planting because it offers cool nights and warm days. This weather creates a soil temperature conducive to strong root growth, and damage to the tree is less likely.
Trees are an important part of our lives; after all, without them we wouldn’t have the oxygen we need to survive!

Ditch Witch Mini Skid Steer

Here at Kimberly Nurseries we believe in efficiency. Did you know that with this one piece of equipment we can save up to 30% in landscape labor? This not only helps us get the job done faster, but saves you both time and money. A landscape job that can be completed faster will cost you less money. Each year we take a look at the new technology and equipment that has been released to find a more efficient way of doing our job. This mini-skid is just one little addition to our repertoire that will save you money. Think of all the other education, experience and tools we have added in the 103 years we have been serving you.

Here are the attachments for the Mini Skid SK650 we put into action and use on a regular basis to help us be more efficient in our job.

Small Auger – This make mass planting of shrubs go much faster.

Large Auger – Typically a hole for a large tree can take up to an hour to dig depending upon soil conditions. With this one addition it can save great amounts of time, making digging a hole quick and easy.

Forks – A very versatile attachment that really helps in almost every aspect of work from loading and unloading pallets to moving around trees and boulders.

½ Yard Bucket – A wheel barrow is typically ¼ yard or less. Not only can we move more material but we can do it much faster.

Backhoe – This is just the ticket for those sticky situations where we need to work around tricky obstacles.

Have you recently purchases a new home, or thinking of selling your existing?

Have you recently purchases a new home, or thinking of selling your existing? Why should you even bother with landscaping your property?

Proper landscaping increases the value of your home. Typically you receive more back on your investment than even remodeling your kitchen. On average a well thought out and designed landscape will increase property value by 15%. Not only that but it helps increase the aesthetics and sale ability, helping you to sell your home faster and easier. The landscape is the first part of your home that a buyer sees.

An appropriate landscape will also enhance the enjoyment of your property. A properly places patio system or water feature can help make use of all of your outdoor living space. Even if you aren’t outside enjoying your new landscape, it will provide stunning views from inside of your home. Think of the last time you did the dished or sat in your favorite chair, how often do you look out the window? A proper landscape includes all of the appropriate views from inside of your home.

Proper Soil for Your Landscape

The more you learn about landscape shrubs and trees the more you may realize that soil conditions can be key to their survival and ability to reach their potential. One of the best ways to find out is by getting a soil test done on your property. This way you know what plant material will work best in your soil. Here in Idaho our soil is very alkaline, which means that the soil pH is over 7. If you have any questions regarding which type of plant material work best in our soil don’t hesitate to post back your question, email us or give us a call (208-733-2717). Listed below you will find a local company that does soil testing.

Martin Luther King Jr.

A few prophetic quotes from Martin Luther King Jr.

“Change does not roll in on wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle.”

"The quality, not the longevity, of one's life is what is important."

"Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase."

"The Winter Garden brings together coloured stems, coloured leaves and winter flowers with variations in texture and form. Above all, the handling of light is crucial for the success of the overall design."
